Welcome To The World Of Community Photojournalism
Welcome to the land of the small town photojournalist. I say small town but really, anyone is welcome. I have been a newspaper photojournalist for 17 years. Ouch! When I started at a small paper in North Carolina, I had the same dreams every young photojournalist has; TO WORK FOR THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC! If that didn’t work out then the Washington Post or New York Times would do. Obviously I never have made it. In fact, I am still working in a small newspaper in Decatur, Alabama. The Decatur Daily has been kind enough to employ me for the past 13 years and all the photographic content on this blog is being used with their permission.
I really hope to take what I have learned, sometimes painfully, and help other people who are in the news business, particularly in smaller markets. A bunch of people have helped me, so I want to give something back by helping others. Some of this blog will be about staying motivated in the small newspaper world, the world of community journalism. Some of it will be about technical stuff, a kind of how to, or maybe how to do it better. Some of it will be just fun stuff. But non of it will be about complaining. That just makes everybody miserable. How do I know you ask…
My first photo post is from a presidential visit. We have all seen the photos of the president and we all know what to expect, but hey, I don’t shoot, err, photographic the President every day so it was very cool to see my name under a photo of the world’s most powerful political leader. Most of the future posts will be a bit more humble but have some fun and talk back. Lets create a cool community where we all grow and have some fun.

I found your site thru the Strobist as well. I really look forward to seeing and reading about what you do on a day-to-day basis. How to get through the “slow” days is probably about as insightful as a photo blog gets.
